Franz Joseph Glacier
Anticipation built up inside me as the clouds rolled in and it started to drizzle on our drive to the Franz Joseph Glacier. As I see it, there is no better way to see the rawness of the New Zealand landscape than on an overcast day. As we walked up to the glacier, I felt home. If one can call home a feeling rather than a place with four walls. The air was crisp, I had my favourite human beside me and I was reminded, as I often am, that some of the most magnificent things that exist in this world are created without human intervention. From the glacier that towered above us to a tiny collection of moss keeping a colony of microbes alive, I was in awe. Minutes turned into hours and before we knew it we had spent half a day completing a walk that was supposed to take one hour. It was nice to get lost in the moment with ‘experience’ being the only item on the agenda.
